What is Pendulum:Pendulum is a card that is half a monster and half a spell card.
Pendulum Monsters:known as a Pendulum Card in the Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V anime, is a type of Main Deck Monster Card that is half green and half orange or yellow (dependent on whether it is an Effect Monster or a Normal Monster). They were introduced in Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V. Pendulum Monsters can be activated from the hand as a Spell Card, placing it in a Pendulum Zone. These monsters can be used to perform Pendulum Summons.
While in the Pendulum Zone, it is treated as a Spell Card and not as a monster until it leaves the Pendulum Zone. After resolving, it will remain face-up as a Spell, and continues to apply its Pendulum Effects, if any (its Monster Effects are not applied). Pendulum Monsters cannot be Set in the Pendulum Zone. Although they are treated as Spells, they are special cards that are not treated as a Normal, Continuous, Field, Equip, Quick-Play, or Ritual Spell Cards. Unlike Field Spell Cards, you cannot send an existing Pendulum Monster to the Graveyard by game mechanics by placing a new Pendulum Monster over it. As long as there are open Pendulum Zones, there is no limit to the number of times a Pendulum Monster can be activated from the hand per turn.
Once per turn, during the Main Phase, while there are Pendulum Monsters in both Pendulum Zones, the turn player can perform a Pendulum Summon, using the Pendulum Monsters' Pendulum Scales to determine the Levels of the monsters that can be Summoned.
When a Pendulum Monster (even if it is face-down) would be sent from the field to the Graveyard, either as a Monster Card or Spell Card, it is placed face-up in the Extra Deck Zone instead. (Pendulum Monsters can cause the total size of the Extra Deck to be larger than would be allowed during Deck building.) If a Pendulum Monster is sent from the hand, Main Deck or Extra Deck to the Graveyard; has its activation as a Spell Card or Summon negated; or is detached, it is sent to the Graveyard like normal. A Pendulum Monster in the Extra Deck Zone can be Summoned again by Pendulum Summon, as long as its Level is within the Scales.
Pendulum Monsters are not Special Summon monsters like Fusion, Ritual, Synchro and Xyz Monsters. They can still be Normal or Tribute Summoned.
As the Pendulum Effects and the Pendulum Scales take up the space where the Set Number would usually be placed, this value is placed in the bottom left corner of the card instead, in the same line as the ATK/DEF values of the Pendulum Monster.
In the anime, Yuya's Pendulum Monsters were originally Effect Monsters, but they were transformed by the power of Yuya's pendant into their current state. When a Pendulum Monster is placed into a Pendulum Zone, it appears in a transparent column of blue light from a portal in the ground not dissimilar to the Summoning of monsters in Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's. In the anime, Pendulum Monsters are a valid target for cards that affect monsters and cards that affect Spells.
Pendulum Zones:The Pendulum Zones are two card Zones introduced in Starter Deck 2014.
The left Pendulum Zone, colored blue with a blue Pendulum Scale jewel, is located in between the Field Zone and the Extra Deck Zone, while the right Pendulum Zone, colored red with a red Pendulum Scale jewel, is located in between the Graveyard Zone and the Deck Zone.
Pendulum Monsters can either be Summoned as monsters, or activated as Spell Cards in a Pendulum Zone. When a Pendulum Monster is activated as a Spell Card in a Pendulum Zone, its Pendulum Effects are applied rather than its monster effects. A Pendulum Monster cannot be Set in a Pendulum Zone. Pendulum Monsters are only treated as Spell Cards, not monsters, while in a Pendulum Zone.
The Zone a Pendulum Monster is placed in determines which of its Pendulum Scales will be applied during a Pendulum Summon. If a Pendulum Monster is placed in the left (blue) Pendulum Zone, the left (blue) Pendulum Scale on the Pendulum Monster will be applied. Likewise, if it is placed in the right (red) Pendulum Zone, the right (red) Pendulum Scale on the Pendulum Monster will be applied.
Pendulum Scale:A Pendulum Scale is a set of indicators unique to Pendulum Monsters. Two of them are located above the "Monster Effect" text box of the Pendulum Monster, with the "Pendulum Effect" of the Pendulum Monster placed between them. All Pendulum Monster have two Pendulum Scale values, signified by the blue symbol and the red symbol.
Pendulum Scales are used in Pendulum Summoning. You can Pendulum Summon monsters from the hand and/or Pendulum Monsters that have been sent to the Extra Deck whose Levels are in between the Pendulum Scale values. In the anime, the Pendulum Scale appears as a glowing number below the Pendulum Monster when it is in the Pendulum Zone.
The official rulebook states that a Pendulum Monster placed in the left Pendulum Zone uses its left Pendulum Scale value and vice versa for the right side, implying that monsters may have different Pendulum Scale values written on the card. However, all currently known Pendulum Monsters have the same value in both of their Pendulum Scales.
As with a monster's Level/Rank, ATK, and DEF, there appear to be some unofficial 'rules' that govern how high or low a monster's Pendulum Scale values may be. A monster's Pendulum Scales may be as low as 2 or as high as 7 normally; having a Scale of 1 or lower or a Scale of 8 or higher requires that the monster's Pendulum Effect have negative conditions that restrict its use.
Pendulum EffectPendulum Effect are a new feature unique to Pendulum Monsters. This kind of effect is written in small typesetting in a partially transparent box, which is right above the monster's lore box and between the Pendulum Scales. These effects are applied while the Pendulum Monster is active on the field at a Pendulum Zone as a Spell Card. Having Pendulum Effects is not essential for Pendulum Monsters, for some of them do not have any, thus the box is left empty. Note that even Normal Pendulum Monsters with no Monster Effects at all may have Pendulum Effects.
